A$AP Rocky Talks Suicidal Thoughts on ‘Phoenix’ Track

Depression is a condition affecting a widespread percentage of Americans on a daily basis, but the social stigma attached to it — and the lack of resources afforded our public mental healthcare system — means it’s often swept under the rug. On his debut album ‘Long.Live.A$AP,’ rapper ASAP Rocky is doing his part to raise awareness.

Rocky discussed the topic during a recent interview with MTV (embedded above), delving into the dark thoughts that inspired his song ‘Phoenix.’

Reflecting on the lyrics “Bloody ink on my pad spelled suicide / Michael Jackson even passed cause you scrutinized,” Rocky told the network, “Those are natural feelings that we all get sometimes. You hurt so bad and you’re going through so much pain to the point where sometimes you don’t even wanna live anymore. That’s how a lot of people think, whether we’d like to admit it or not and that’s all I was showcasing. It was that emotion… suicidal kinda emotions.”

As MTV’s report points out, ‘Phoenix’ comes at a poignant time in the hip-hop community, given the recent suicides of rappers Capital STEEZ and Freddy E. And for Rocky, it’s all about shining a light on a subject too many of us would rather ignore.

“I’m not glorifying it at all,” he concluded. “I’m just basically telling you that sometimes I have suicidal thoughts. And maybe I should seek help, or maybe it’s not that deep.”

Destiny’s Child, ‘Nuclear’ – Song Review

Destiny's Child Love Songs
Sony Legacy

Are you ready to go ‘Nuclear?’ Too bad if you’re not, because it’s here. The brand new Destiny’s Child track will appear on their just-announced ‘Love Songs‘ album, a collection of their most romantic tracks from 1997 through 2004, which drops on Jan. 29. It’s the first taste of music from the trio, comprised of Beyonce, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, since they split in 2005.

The Pharrell Williams-produced song is butter smooth R&B, devoid of any room-filling vocal acrobatics by Bey, unquestionably the most famous member of the group then and now. But it’s not Beyonce and the Supremes here — each Destiny lady has equal time to let her silky, rich and celestial vocals shine.

It’s a sweet and sexy track with some harmonizing. Overall, it is rooted in the ’90s R&B sound, with a shimmering backbeat. There’s some bursts of breath that aren’t so much vocals as they are somewhat erotic noises emitted by the girls, and they are sultry and humanizing.

On first listen, ‘Nuclear’ was a little underwhelming. By the second listen, it grows on you, when you realize they sing about “how we keep our s— together.” You’re like, “Damn, Desinty’s got attitude.” By the third spin, you’ll find yourself shuffling and grooving. It’s not an instant “I loved it on first listen” track, but by the time you’ve digested it more than once, you’ll love it.

It’s a romantic, snuggle-by-the-fire song, anti-’Bootylicious’ dance jam — and that’s fine with us. It’s refined, polished and heavenly.

With all this Destiny’s Child activity — the ‘Love Songs’ album, the Super Bowl reunion, the release of ‘Nuclear’ and even Justin Bieber referencing them in ‘As Long as You Love Me’ — we’re thinking something more permanent could be in the works. You never know. Ladies?

Keep up with Destiny happenings here.

A$AP Rocky + Florence Welch Song ‘I Come Apart’ Hits the Internet

Rapper A$AP Rocky‘s new album ‘Long.Live.A$AP’ boasts an array of big-name collaborations including one with Florence Welch called ‘I Come Apart.’ The song will appear on the deluxe version of the album, which hits stores Jan. 15.

Produced by Emile Haynie and Amanda Ghost, the track features an echoing boom-bap beat and Flo’s trademark falsettos on the chorus. On it, Rocky raps about love and heartbreak.

I thought you said you would never leave / I think back as I took a puff / You know what happens every time you leave / Always come back ’cause you want to f— / Always come back ’cause you want to bust / Holding back / Ain’t no turning back when you fall in love,” he spits. Near the end of the song, we are treated to Welch’s ear-piercing yodeling of “I come apart / Nothing lasts forever.”

We don’t know if hip-hop heads will embrace the Harlem rapper’s experimental rap-pop song, but it’s certainly different. Along with Skrillex‘s ‘Wild for the Night‘ and the posse track ‘1 Train,’ Rocky has quite an eclectic album. We’ll have to see how consumers respond to it on Jan. 15.

Willow Samples Radiohead on New Track ‘Sugar and Spice’

Willow Smith has released a new track called ‘Sugar and Spice’ in which she samples Radiohead’s ‘Codex,’ and steps further away from the days of whipping her hair back and forth.

The melodramatic piano-driven song was released on Jan. 8 via Willow’s Soundcloud profile. The singer goes by the name Arbre Mort (French for “dead tree”) on the platform. The tune showcases Willow’s ethereal vocals, as she sings about her general malaise:

I tried to be sugar and spice, but I’m melancholy and can’t do anything right / The monsters under my bed keep making noise at night, I just want silence.”

Talk about a 180! We still believe Willow is a 21st century girl, but she’s tapping into a whole new creative side that, yet again, proves she’s wise beyond her 12 years. Just six months ago, she was all about sending a message to her haters, but now Willow is going introspective.

The pensive ballad, aided by the dreamy sounds of Radiohead’s ‘King of Limbs’ track, follows Willow’s reflective ‘I Am Me,’ which was released last summer. Last year, the pre-teen star explained that she has a soft spot for slower tunes, “because when you sing ballads, people can see more of your voice and I like that.”

Demi Lovato’s New Single Rumored to Be Called ‘Pieces of a Heart’

Demi Lovato

UPDATE: According to Disney Music Group, the single is not called ‘Pieces of a Heart.’ It is still unknown what her next single will be called, and when it will drop!

Does Demi Lovato have a new song on the way? According to a rumored tweet by MTV’s Sway Calloway, Lovato’s ‘Pieces of a Heart’ will debut on ‘MTV First’ on Feb. 13 at precisely 7:49PM ET.

The tweet was reportedly posted by Sway and then deleted, though it can be seen online in screenshot form. Maybe he wasn’t supposed to reveal the news just yet and his bosses asked him to remove the posting. If the alleged tweet was accurate, ‘Pieces of a Heart’ could be the lead single from Lovato’s fourth album, which is due sometime this year.

What might ‘Pieces of a Heart’ mean if it’s the actual song title? It could be a sad song about a heart shattered by breakup. Or maybe it’s a metaphor about love. We like the second explanation, especially since the track would be premiering on the eve of Valentine’s Day.

February would be a good time for Lovato to drop a new single, since ‘X Factor‘ is on hiatus. Her last album, 2011′s ‘Unbroken,’ proved to be a successful comeback effort with hit singles ‘Skyscraper’ and ‘Give Your Heart a Break.’

Just don’t wait on Lovato to confirm or deny the report about the new song on Twitter, because she’s taking a break from the social media site.

Listen to Leaked Prince Track ‘Same Page, Different Book’

Leaked through an unknown Twitter account, a previously unreleased Prince song called ‘Same Page, Different Book’ has hit the web. The funky mid-tempo track finds Prince vaguely addressing war, government and spirituality.

He sings, “There go the missiles / Headed for the hood / Trade another car bomb / Did nobody no good / Same page, but a different book / So much more in common if you’d only look.” Midway through the tune, Prince says, “We’re about to let this thing just… groove,” while a guitar lick takes over, followed by a spoken verse from a female voice.

It’s unclear whether the song might be intended for an upcoming Prince album, as the song’s release appears to have been unauthorized.

Nelly Goes For a Ride with ‘Hey Porsche’ Single

Nelly
Jason Merritt, Getty Images

Nelly is back and he’s eyeing the pop charts with his radio-friendly single ‘Hey Porsche.’ The song follows the formula of his 2010 hit ‘Just a Dream’ with its twangy rock guitar riffs and sing-songy rap flows.

On the track, Nelly rhymes about the object of his affection as he metaphorically describes her like the sought-after luxury vehicle. “I want to take your top off / Celebrate, little champagne pop off, yeah / We can turn the clocks off / No rush we can park somewhere,” he raps.

The St. Louis rhymer also sings a catchy pop hook on the chorus that goes, “Hey little Porsche / I want drive ya / Crazy baby girl, there’s nothing like ya / Hey little Porsche / So right, I had to get ya / Back it up and let’s roll.”

It’s blatantly clear that Nelly is going after the pop terrain that fellow rapper Flo Rida has conquered within the past year. Some Nelly fans might frown at that, but it’s the nature of the business. Who knows? He might even score an endorsement deal with the car maker.

Nelly is currently working on his seventh album ‘M.O.,’ which is expected to hit stores in 2013.

SkyBlu of LMFAO Releases ‘Pop Bottles’ Solo Track

SkyBlu
Jason Merritt, Getty Images

Tell us if you’ve heard this one before: LMFAO member does side project, raps about booze in bottles. You have, about RedFoo — but now SkyBlu is at it, too. The nephew-half of the duo dropped a single, ‘Pop Bottles,’ about a week after his afro-and-party-rocking uncle.

Sky’s track sounds a lot like an LMFAO track. He raps, “Pop bottles, make it rain/ Every night it’s all the same / Hit the club, hit the after party, then we hit the plane.” Sounds familiar, right? But it still sounds catchy. Sky employs singer Mark Rosas for the hook.

The track is produced by SkyBlu’s Big Bad University. He explained that while it may not necessarily be accredited, like any other college, it pretty much sets people up for success in their chosen field. In this case, it’s the field of party rocking.

“I created my own university. Basically I grew up people always telling me what I can and can’t do,” he told MTV News. “And I always kind of classified myself as a dreamer … I created a university for dreamers. We have a lot of musical artists in there, and DJs, and everybody in there is about to release a big song. I kind of want to show the world what’s up with Sky.”

What’s up with Sky? Well, shots, models, bottles and more of the same. He sticks with what works! We’re still waiting on that Latin album, though.
