Channing Tatum, Ryan Reynolds, Sean Connery, Nick Nolte and More: The Complete History of People Magazine’s ‘Sexiest Men Alive’ (GALLERY)

Channing Tatum, 2012′s “Sexiest Man Alive” as chosen by People magazine, is in exceptionally good company.

The 32-year-old joins the ranks of some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including his Magic Mike co-star Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Tom Cruise and Jude Law.

And then there are the record holders: two-time winners George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp.

In honor of Tatum’s newest title, Celebuzz is taking a look back at People’s roster of Sexiest Men Alive, dating back to its first winner in 1985, when the publication chose Mel Gibson as the sexiest of them all.

Over the years, the magazine has made some surprising choices for its annual title (Nick Nolte in 1992), while spreading its demographic (Sean Connery, who received the honor at 59 years old in 1989) and teasing Ryan Gosling fans since the actor made his mark with The Notebook some years back. Despite protest from his fans, Gosling still hasn’t been christened “sexiest” by People.

In 1993, the magazine temporarily replaced its “Sexiest Man Alive” award with the “Sexiest Couple Alive,” crowning then-lovebirds Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere.

To date, the youngest winner remains the late John F. Kennedy, Jr., who was crowned sexiest at 27 years old in 1988.

Bradley Cooper Speechless When Asked His Pick for Next ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ (VIDEO)

He seems to say all the right things at the right times. Except when he’s asked to choose a piece of man candy.

“Oh God,” a flummoxed Bradley Cooper stammered to Celebuzz when we asked who he thinks should be People magazine’s next “Sexiest Man Alive.”

How did the actor handle the curveball?

He didn’t.

Cooper, making an appearance at Tuesday’s Hollywood premiere of his new drama, The Words, awkwardly stumbled for an answer before eventually deciding on silence.

The 37-year-old was picked by People as its Sexiest Man Alive in 2011; the long-running honor has been previously bestowed upon Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, George Clooney — and even Harry Hamlin (in 1987).

It is generally regarded as a hot talking point — but ultimately a platform for punchlines among famous men.

What the 37-year-old did offer on Tuesday was details of his upcoming comedy Hangover 3, which he revealed was set to begin filming the very next day. In fact, Cooper had a camera test for the flick earlier on Tuesday, just before the Words premiere.

Cooper also divulged that Hangover 3 will be going in a different direction than its two predecessors, saying, “I can confirm that.”

But the hunk, who recently starred in the comedy Hit and Run, then played coy, only adding that he’s “thrilled” to start shooting Hangover 3.

He certainly should be: the bromance franchise has been one of the most successful comedy series in movie history.

Who do you think should be the next Sexiest Man Alive? Cast your vote in the comments.
