Pharrell Williams Says Miley Cyrus Is an ‘Old Soul’ + Compares Her to Justin Timberlake

Pharrell Miley Cyrus Tyler the Creator

Between her country roots and covers and her ‘Rebel Yell’-ing, no one really knows what to expect from Miley Cyrus‘ new record — except the people working on it with her. Pharrell Williams compared the project to Justin Timberlake‘s transformation from N’SYNC heartthrob to solo superstar and sang the praises of Cyrus not only as a singer, but also as a person.

At first glance, it’s hard to see exactly what (well, other than a paycheck) would compel Williams and Tyler, the Creator to work with teen pop tart Cyrus, but when Williams explains it, it makes a lot more sense. “What we all have in common is that we like new stuff, we like making music that doesn’t exist,” the former half of the Neptunes told HypeBeast. “That’s what Tyler has in common with me and what I have in common with Miley.” He added, “Put it this way, he heard her music and next thing you know he’s in the picture with her. That’s not what you would expect, but that’s what I love doing: totally surprising people.”

Despite their differences, Williams said it wasn’t too hard to get a good vibe going with the ‘Can’t Be Tamed’ singer. “Yeah, at times people were difficult, but it’s all part of the process,” he explained. “She is an old soul that was trapped in a younger situation who just bursted [sic] at the seams, and I was just happy to be there during that transformation.”

Williams pointed out that he faced similar criticism and questioning when he first started working with Timberlake, who’s “ready” to release new music himself. “I remember when they use to ask me about the same questions with Justin [Timberlake]; people be like why you going in with N’SYNC? Because there’s somebody in there that you don’t know,” he insisted. “Wait till you see what Miley’s done. Oh man!”

Expectant parents Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose share a song together on ‘Rise Above,’ which appears on ‘O.N.I.F.C.’ The tune also features both production and verses from Pharrell Williams and fellow Taylor Gang rhymer Tuki Carter.

One thing Wiz can do well is make chilled-out music, and ‘Rise Above,’ rises to the occasion (all puns intended). The production features bongo slaps, airy keyboards and slapping snares.

On the song, Wizzy reflects on how his success brings jealousy and envy from the haters. “You would have thought that from seeing me going hard that it would motivate these motherf—ers to get on their job,” he raps. “But instead they are hating on what I’ve been doing / Having conversations in my face on what I should be doing for them.”

For Pharrell, he simply brushes his shoulders off when it comes to the haters. He spits, “That nickel pill / Forget the deal / Remember what? / Get for real / My whip appeal / My crib is real / My wrists is real / Vrrrooom / The Richard meal.”

Meanwhile, Tuki, who’s also a tattoo artist, vows to stay on his grind and ignore the naysayers, rapping, “I hustle to muscle / I never be muzzled.”

Ms. Rose jumps in at the end of the song and asks the question, “Man, what the f— is wrong with these n—-s?” It’s short but it gets to the point.

If you love Wiz and you love to get high, then take flight with ‘Rise Above’ — it’s a mellow, chilled-out jam for the stoners.

Wiz Khalifa’s ‘O.N.I.F.C.’ will land in stores nationwide on Dec. 4.

Pharrell, 39, recently spoke to W magazine about living in what editors called “the world’s most luxurious treefort.”

Jay-Z + Frank Ocean Collaborate With Pharrell Williams in the Studio

Frank Ocean Pharrell Jay-Z

What do you get when you add Jay-Z, Pharrell Williams and Frank Ocean in the studio? We hope an awesome collaborative song. Last night (Oct. 8 ), Skateboard P tweeted out a picture of himself with Hov and Ocean hanging out in the lab.

Under the photo, the caption read, “Yessur, in the studio with @S_C_ and @frank_ocean.” Pharrell then tweeted to his fans, “Can’t wait for y’all to hear what I’m working on with big bro [Jay-Z] and lil bro [Frank Ocean].”

As noted by Billboard, Pharrell has created beautiful music with both artists in the past. The hitmaker is responsible for a number of hits in Jay’s career including ‘Excuse Me Miss,’ which he performed on the last night of his eight-show run at the Barclays Center. Most recently, Pharrell produced Ocean’s tender ballad ‘Sweet Life,’ which appears on his debut LP ‘Channel Orange.’ Meanwhile, Ocean himself has appeared on Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s tracks ‘No Church in the Wild’ and ‘Made in America’ from their ‘Watch the Throne’ album.

No word on what this new song is about, but over the past few weeks Frank Ocean has been clocking major time in the studio. Not only has the singer-songwriter been in the lab with Pharrell and Jay-Z, but he’s also been creating tunes with Roc Nation rapper J.Cole and producer No I.D. He’s a busy man!
