Aussies Unite! Stars Step Out for G’Day USA Gala (PHOTOS)

Some of Australia’s very finest celebrated their homeland on Saturday, ahead of the Golden Globe Awards.

From Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban to a mini Grease reunion between Olivia Newton John and John Travolta, there was plenty of star action at the 10th Annual G’Day USA Gala, held at the JW Marriot in Los Angeles, Calif.

Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne and Mel Gibson were also on hand for the black tie event, which honored legendary actor Paul Hogan.

On the red carpet, Kidman and Urban gushed about their romance and their little girls Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.

“As we kissed our daughters goodbye when we headed out tonight we kind of went, ‘Wow, it’s amazing how life plays out,’” the Paperboy actress told the Australian Associated Press [via The Sydney Morning Herald].

“Look what happened from that chance meeting. We now have a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old who are waving us bye.”

Kidman is up for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture on Sunday, against Amy Adams, Sally Field, Anne Hathaway and Helen Hunt.

Who Will Win the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture? (PHOTOS & VIDEOS)

Jessica Chastain Maggie Smith Marion Cotillard Meryl Streep Helen Mirren Jennifer Lawrence Naomi Watts

Before this morning’s Academy Award nominees get their shot at Oscar, they will first have to contend with the Golden Globes.

The Globes offer a decent barometer as to who will go home with Hollywood’s most coveted award. As the town ramps up for the Globes on Sunday, January 13, Celebuzz takes a look at each nominee in the major acting and film categories.

First up: Who will – and should – win Best Actress.

With the Oscar nominations announced, there is some expected overlap between the Academy’s picks and the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Favorites Naomi Watts (The Impossible), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Jennifer Lawrence (The Silver Linings Playbook) have emerged as the frontrunners for both awards, with Chastain and Lawrence seemingly in a dead heat for victory.

While a Golden Globe win does not guarantee an Academy Award, it does provide a decent indicator as to who should start making extra room on their mantle.

Check out our breakdown of the actresses in contention and their chances, then share with us your predictions in the comments below!

‘Impossible’ Star Naomi Watts: 8 Memorable Movie Roles (PHOTOS)

Over the last decade or so, Naomi Watts has become one of Hollywood’s most reliable actresses.

The 44-year-old Oscar nominee, who got her big break in David Lynch’s mind-bending drama Mulholland Dr., will continue to stretch her wide range on Friday in the emotional drama The Impossible, in which she plays a wife and mother who tries to find her family after the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004.

Thus far, Watts — who next year will play the late Princess Diana in the aptly titled biopic Diana — has picked up multiple nominations for the film, and is already being positioned as a contender for her second Oscar nomination come January.

Will it actually happen? Time will tell.

In the meantime, with the film out today, Celebuzz thought it would be a good chance to look back at Watts’ eclectic and critically acclaimed career on the big screen, from Mulholland Dr. to The Ring and, most recently, Fair Game.

Have a look at it now in the gallery, above, then share your favorite Naomi Watts movie in the comments.

Ewan McGregor Says ‘The Impossible’ Gave Him His First Chance On-Screen to ‘Explore What it Means to Be a Parent’ (VIDEO)

Ewan McGregor is best-known on screen for playing bachelors – or at least, bachelors embarking on big relationships – but The Impossible gave him his first-ever opportunity to really play a parent.

Although technically he portrayed a father in Tim Burton’s 2003 film Big Fish, McGregor said that his turn as a father trying to keep his family together in the wake of tsunami offered him some unique challenges that hit close to home.

“It doesn’t change the way that I see my family,” McGregor said of his role in the film. “But the fact that I’m used to that relationship with my children – I know exactly and intimately what that feels like and what that means, to be a father.”

“This is the first time I’ve been able to explore what it means to be a parent, albeit in an extraordinarily different situation,” he continued. “I drew of course on my experience as a dad to play this part, although I never made myself think about my children before scenes, or I tried never to think, well, what would it be like it that was my daughter. I couldn’t do that.”

Oddly, the verisimilitude of the story itself was what McGregor found more troubling initially – if only because he wasn’t aware that The Impossible’s story was based on true events.

“I read the script thinking it was a film about the tsunami in 2004,” he recalled. “And I was a bit dubious about that – that if someone made up a story and set it in a real-life disaster, I think that would be something that you wouldn’t want to be part of.”

“And then I discovered afterward it was a true story when I spoke to my agent, and it made perfect sense – all of the details in the script are so personal.”

The Impossible opens in theaters nationwide on December 21. Watch Celebuzz’ interview with McGregor’s co-star, Naomi Watts, below.

‘The Impossible’ Star Naomi Watts Says She’s No Fearless Parent: ‘I’m Terrible in a Crisis’ (VIDEO)

In The Impossible, Naomi Watts plays a woman who struggles to keep her child safe in the wake of a tsunami. Not the least of which because her character was based on a real person, she said that the experience taught her a lot about the idea that parents must be fearless in their responsibilties, no matter what challenge they face.

“Allegedly that’s true,” she told Celebuzz when asked about how unafraid she is to do anything needed for her kids. “I still can’t quite believe that. I think I’m terrible in a crisis.”

“But that really inspired me in this story,” she explained. “It’s clear, she becomes this powerful and courageous woman, although she never wants to be thought of as that.”

Since her breakthrough performance in David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive, Watts has been one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actresses. Although she’s received just one Oscar nomination – for 2004’s 21 Grams – she’s received widespread recognition for her roles in King Kong, Eastern Promises and many other movies.

But Watts says that it never gets easier to hear her work being heaped with praise, even when she’s proud of it. When asked how she feels about the Oscar talk surrounding The Impossible, she answered simply: “Full of angst.”

“I try not to think about it,” Watts said. “But it’s hard not to think about it because people bring it up – and it’s flattering of course. But I’ve been down this road a couple of times, and it gets you all nervous, so it’s best not to think about it.”

The Impossible opens in theaters nationwide on December 21. Watch the film’s theatrical trailer below.

Allison Williams as Catherine Deneuve, Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly: Style Icons and the Stars that Play Them (PHOTOS)

We’ve all dreamed of taking a walk in our style icon’s glamorous shoes. And who hasn’t channeled their fashion idol before, or borrowed a note from their style book? But, outside of Halloween, few of us get to dress the part, head to toe.

So its no surprise that stylish stars like Katie Holmes, Nicole Kidman, and Allison Williams, jumped at the chance to play some of fashions most famous faces, whether for magazines or movies.

This wave of sartorial nostalgia sweeping through Hollywood has inspired our latest Fashion Flashback: We’re taking a look at all the lucky leading ladies who’ve gotten to dress up as some of fashion’s most iconic women.

Let’s start with the ultimate dress-up fantasies: Holmes scored the role of a fashionista’s lifetime when she played Jackie Kennedy in the TV miniseries The Kennedys, and French actress Audrey Tautou caused major Chanel-envy when she was cast as the legendary designer Coco Chanel in the film Coco Before Chanel.

Then there were the stars who got to play their own fashion idols…

Sienna Miller chopped her boho waves and switched up her style to play her fashion icon Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl, and Lindsay Lohan didn’t hesitate to throw on a black wig (and lot’s of jewels) to play her idol Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s Liz and Dick.

Playing the part of fashion royalty, Aussie besties Nicole Kidman and Naomi Watts have both transformed into posh princesses of the past for upcoming roles. A style icon herself, Kidman was an easy choice to play actress-turned-princess Grace Kelly, while it’s eerie how much Watts resembled the late Princess Diana while filming scenes for an upcoming movie on the Princess of Wales.

Even fashion icon-in-training Williams has gotten a chance to play dress up in a fashion legend’s closet. The Girls star channeled Catherine Deneuve’s sultry sophistication for the most recent issue of Page Six Magazine.

Check out more stars who’ve dressed the part of fashion’s most iconic faces in our gallery.

Which fashion legend would you want to play? For our fashion editor, it’s fellow blonde and ’90s style icon Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Share your fashion idol in the comments below.

Naomi Watts, Jennifer Lopez and Reese Witherspoon: Hottest Star Sightings of the Day (PHOTOS)

Today’s edition of Celeb Snaps is all about the ladies.

Whether it’s gals who lunch or rock their world tours, Hollywood’s hottest starlets are running things around the world.

Naomi Watts was drop dead gorgeous at the Los Angeles premiere for her new flick, The Impossible, on Monday evening.

Watts told Celebuzz that Princess Diana would be “overjoyed” by Kate Middleton’s pregnancy. The 44-year-old Australian actress plays the late Princess in an upcoming film, Diana.

“The media is very different now then it was back then,” Watts said, referring to Lady Di’s tragic death in 1997 after her car lost control during a high-speed paparazzi chase in Paris.

However, Watts isn’t the only leading lady enjoying her time behind the flashbulbs.

Jennifer Lopez was rocking the house during her Melbourne, Australia leg of her Dance Again worldwide tour. The mother-of-two donned a sequined bodysuit, which hugged all her killer curves as she took the stage.

Back in sunny Los Angeles, Reese Witherspoon was seen strolling the streets of Beverly Hills after a luncheon with girlfriends. The Walk the Line star looked slim as she flaunted her post-baby in a little black dress and matching handbag.

How great do you think Witherspoon looks after having her son three months ago? Take a closer look in the gallery, above.
