Oscar ballots were mailed out to voters on Monday, which means that members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will be scrambling over the next couple of weeks to catch up on every movie they might have missed this year.
Already, many of the top categories have been decided. (Yes, Anne Hathaway, you can start picking out your Oscar dress.)
But with the element of surprise always in play, Celebuzz thought today would be a good chance to plug some our favorite performances from 2012 — ones that may not otherwise catch Oscar’s attention.
Among our favorites: Matthew McConaughey in Magic Mike, which captivated audiences yet couldn’t even manage to get a Golden Globe nomination, and Judi Dench in Skyfall, which, c’mon, was totally the best performance in that movie. (Sorry, Javier Bardem.)
The Silver Linings Playbook and Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln lead the SAG Award Nominations, which were announced Wednesday in Los Angeles. Each film garnered 4 nominations each, including Best Ensemble. Playbook’s Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for Best Actress, and Daniel Day-Lewis snagged a Best Actor nom. For the complete list of nominees, click here!
Wally Pfister, the guy who shot Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, has enlisted Johnny Depp to star in his top-secret directorial debut, Transcendence. Plot details have been kept insanely close to the vest on the project, until now…
In a recent interview, Transcendence producer Andrew Kosove revealed that the story “involves a scientist (Depp) whose brain gets uploaded into a supercomputer with the aim of creating the world’s first machine that can think for itself.” Nanotechnology and artificial intelligence is also involved. Kosove also provided an update on the film’s casting: Noomi Rapace (Prometheus) is no longer in the running for the film’s lead female role, and Ewan McGregor passed on an early draft of the script. Depp’s casting is expected to attract an impressive ensemble, so Celebuzz will keep you posted. [The Wrap]
Fans of Community’s Gillian Jacobs are about to get their fix of the TV star on the big screen. The actress has signed on to join The Hunger Games’ Elizabeth Banks in the comedy Walk of Shame. The film, written and directed by Steve Brill, centers on a local news anchor (Banks) who, after a drunk one-night stand, wakes up broke and without her I.D. She must trek across Los Angeles to make it to a life-changing job interview. Jacobs will play Banks’ best friend, naturally. [The Hollywood Reporter]
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is getting a sequel?! Tinker, Tailor is getting a sequel. Producer Eric Fellner, while doing press rounds for his current film Les Miserables, revealed that director Tomas Alfredson and writer Peter Straughan are actively working on the screenplay for Smiley’s People, which once again centers on Gary Oldman’s retired spy, Smiley. [Collider]

Not only is Ryan Gosling good looking and talented, he’s got a big heart too.
Over the weekend, the A-list hunk, 31, took along a film crew from his movie set in Texas to attend a charity event for deaf children.
Gosling who is currently shooting a Terrence Malick film in the city of Austin surprised everyone at the event by making an appearance.
“Ryan was there filming with a crew,” said Anne Adams, the executive director of the Texas School for the Deaf who had organized the Spooky Skedaddle 5k and Festival.
“We actually didn’t know he’d be there. The crew had told us they may come by to take photos of the event to work into the film. But we weren’t expecting Ryan. It was a nice surprise.”
Gosling was joined by his co-stars Michael Fassbender, 35, and Rooney Mara, 27, and happily posed with the young fans who had gathered to catch a sneak peak of the movie star.

Natalie Portman was spotted planting a wet one on Michael Fassbender on the set of their untitled Terrence Malick project in Austin, Texas this Friday.
Sporting a figure-hugging wedding dress, the 31-year-old Oscar winner played the role of the blushing bride, holding her 35-year-old co-star in a passionate tight embrace as the cameras rolled. Portman was even seen carrying a colorful floral boutique as she kissed her onscreen groom.
But Portman is not the only actress who was recently snapped in a wedding gown on set.
On Oct. 8, comedienne Amy Poehler was seen in a big, frilly number during reshoots for her upcoming film, They Came Together. Complete with white heels and a long veil, the Parks and Recreation star was all smiles as she strutted down the streets of New York City.
