2012 Year in Review: 10 Most Jaw-Dropping Moments (PHOTOS)

We’re pretty jaded, we consumers of celebrity culture. Lady Gaga? Been there, seen that. Honey Boo Boo? Stranger people have become sudden stars than the zaftig 7-year-old beauty pageant contestant and her self-styled redneck clan. Nicki Minaj feuding with her new co-worker Mariah Carey? Color us unsurprised.

It took a lot more than that to make our jaws drop this year. In order for us to star slack-jawed at our screens or text, “WTF?” to our friends, we needed to see stars acting out of character, people going off the rails, or just general good old-fashioned betrayal.

The things that shocked us this year include the events that even shocked the people involved in them. That someone would cheat on international heartthrob Robert Pattinson with their older movie director? That the very classy Kate Middleton would be embroiled in a topless scandal? Or that Angus T. Austin would go religious on us and start trashing the show that made him a multi-millionaire?

Click through the gallery above for our list of the 10 most jaw-dropping moments of 2012.

Are you still stunned? Are there any astonishing moments we should have included but didn’t. Go ahead and tell us; our delicate sensibilities can handle it.

Kate Winslet, Ned Rocknroll Married: 8 Secret Hollywood Weddings (PHOTOS)

Given the fast-paced, round-the-clock world we live in, it’s always surprising when a high-profile Hollywood celebrity manages to pull off a secret wedding.

Oscar-winning beauty Kate Winslet did just that when she married longtime beau Ned Rocknroll earlier this month in New York. (According to reports, not even the couple’s parents knew about the ceremony. In fact, Winslet’s Titanic co-star Leonardo DiCaprio gave her away, instead.)

In fact, many celebrities tied the knot this year without all of the magazine covers and media hoopla to prove it.

Pulling a similar move in September were Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, whose intimate South Carolina nuptials were so low-key, the couple still hasn’t really addressed the ceremony to the media.

Which other stars have managed to marry in secret?

Get your jaws ready to drop, because Celebuzz has pulled together the eight most-memorable private ceremonies.

Check them out in the gallery, above.

Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Craig, George Clooney: Hunks Who Got Their Start in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Films (PHOTOS)

Of all the harsh realities made clear by the gender gap, perhaps the truest is that – as of this Friday – girlfriends everywhere will be dragged reluctantly to see The Hobbit. This time, however, Peter Jackson’s journey through Middle Earth has been stripped of its eye-candy, swapping Orlando Bloom and Viggo Mortensen for a handful of dwarves, Dr. Watson and a geezer. While the movie will no doubt be epic, the real scenery will undoubtedly be just that: the actual scenery.

All of which made us consider just how many dramatic, respected and handsome leading men – prime examples of non-nerd masculinity – actually made some of their biggest breakthroughs in sci-fi, fantasy and all-around geek adventures. Read on to find out…

Click here to launch the gallery of gorgeous leading men who made their bones in genre movies.

Many of the actors on Celebuzz’ list certainly had credits prior to their turns in fantasy films – Mortensen worked steadily as a supporting player for more than a decade before striking paydirt with the Lord of the Rings series, for example.

And although many of them have gone on to even greater glories, they first became popular in the public consciousness because of these projects. On the other hand, some of them may never surpass the success they enjoyed with these films and film series. But as cinephiles and avid filmgoers, we’re only too happy to celebrate – and maybe in a few cases, reintroduce – the sci-fi-, horror and fantasy films that helped the world fall in love with them.

Which of these hunks is your favorite — or which appeared in your favorite fantasy film? Keep the discussion going in the comments section after watching the theatrical trailer for The Hobbit below!

Hugh Jackman, Ryan Gosling, Robert Pattinson: Hollywood’s 50 Hottest Hunks (PHOTOS)

Hunks have long been a part of the glamorous life of Hollywood, dating back to the likes of Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, Paul Newman and beyond.

Today especially, fans of movies, television, music and more are spoiled by the amount of good-looking men in the business.

Whether Hugh Jackman is running shirtless along the beaches of Australia, or George Clooney is flashing his signature style, it seems you can’t go a day (or, in some lucky instances, an hour) without seeing someone really, really, really good-looking celebrity doing their thing.

Not that we’re complaining.

In fact, we’re celebrating!

Today, Celebuzzhas pulled together a gallery of our 50 favorite hunks in Hollywood, many of whom just happen to be shirtless.

So, instead of reading the rest of this post, jump into the gallery and check them out in their full hunky glory.

‘Playing for Keeps’ vs. ‘Twilight’: Box Office Battle (POLL)

This weekend at the movies, it’s soccer-themed romantic comedy versus vampire-werewolf love story versus James Bond!

Gerard Butler‘s new movie, Playing for Keeps, is the sole new release arriving in theaters this weekend, where it will face-off against popular holdovers Twilight: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 and Skyfall. Will the 300 star and his legion of soccer mom fans be enough to defeat Team Edward?

Celebuzz wants you to weigh in on this weekend’s battle at the box office.

Keeps casts Butler as a 40-something womanizer opposite Jessica Biel in this coming-of-age late in life story. Given Keeps‘ soft marketing push, Butler and his loyal fanbase face an uphill battle if they want to dethrone Breaking Dawn — Part 2 from the No. 1 spot, where it has reigned for the last three weeks.

Matt Damon In Talks for George Clooney’s ‘Monuments Men’ (REPORT)

George Clooney has already enlisted James Bond for his next film. Now, he’s looking to recruit Jason Bourne.

Matt Damon is in talks to join the period thriller The Monuments Men, a film directed and co-written by the Oscar winner, according to Deadline.

The Bourne Ultimatum star is negotiating for an unspecified role in the World War II flick, which centers on a crew of art historians that must infiltrate Nazi Germany to retrieve valuable art stolen by the Third Reich.

Should Damon sign on, he will join an impressive cast that includes 007 himself, Daniel Craig, along with Cate Blanchett and Bill Murray.

Clooney wrote the script with producing partner and writer Grant Heslov (Good Night, and Good Luck). Monuments Men reunites Damon and Clooney, who were last seen together onscreen in 2007’s Ocean’s 13.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Vs. ‘Killing Them Softly’: Box Office Battle (POLL)

Brad Pitt‘s new movie, Killing Them Softly, is (literally) gunning after Twilight: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 for box office supremacy this weekend. But will Pitt in badass mode be enough to dethrone Bella and Team Edward?

Celebuzz wants you to weigh in on this weekend’s battle at the box office.

In one corner, Pitt reunites with his Assassination of Jesse James director Andrew Dominik for the gritty crime thriller Softly. The movie, based on the novel Cogan’s Trade, centers on Pitt’s pursuit of two crooks who thought it was a good idea to rob a Mob-backed card game.

This is Pitt’s first movie since last year’s Moneyball, and if the reviews are any indication, it looks like Softly will need more than putting a shotgun in Pitt’s hands to conquer the box office.

Breaking Dawn — Part 2 enters its third frame as the movie to beat. Since opening on November 16, the final Twilight film has retained the number one spot at the box office, despite strong competition for holdover Skyfall, the highest-grossing James Bond movie in the U.S.

Will Kristen StewartRobert Pattinson and a crazy amount of end-battle decapitations be enough to fend off the competition?

‘Twilight’ Triumphs Again, ‘Skyfall’ Sustains Over the Thanksgiving Holiday

Twilight fans kept Breaking Dawn — Part 2 at the top of the box office for the second weekend in a row, leading to the biggest Thanksgiving weekend ever.

Daniel Craig’s Skyfall and Ang Lee’s Life of Pi also delivered big business.

How big? Read on…

The final film in the Twilight saga scored $43 million over the weekend, for a total of $64 million over the five-day holiday frame – enough to retain the number one spot for the second week in a row.

Breaking Dawn — Part 2, starring Kristen Stewart, has earned $200 million in the U.S. as of Monday, bringing its worldwide total to a franchise-high of $577 million.

In it’s third frame, Skyfall earned $34 million over the weekend, making the 23rd James Bond film the first 007 picture to hit $200 million in the U.S. Directed by Sam Mendes, Skyfall’s current worldwide box office rests at an impressive $790 million.

Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln continued to show great legs at the U.S. box office, securing the No. 3 spot with $25 million. Dreamworks’ Rise of the Guardians, considered to be a major player at the Thanksgiving box office, came in at No. 4, with a less-than-expected take of $24 million.

Meanwhile, 20th Century Fox’s adaptation of the novel Life of Pi exceeded expectations, scoring a fifth-place finish with $22 million in three days. The 3D film was expected to gross $20 million for the entire holiday period, a total it cleared in its first three days.  Currently, Pi’s five-day total sits at $30.2 million.

MGM’s long-delayed remake of Red Dawn opened at No. 7, with a 3-day tally of $14 million ($22 million over five days).

Next weekend finds Brad Pitts crime thriller, Killing Me Softly, competing with Team Edward and James Bond for box office supremacy.  Killing opens Friday, November 30.
