Bruno Mars, ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ – Song Review

The irony of Bruno Mars‘ new single, ‘Locked Out of Heaven,’ is that it’s actually about activities that likely occur pretty far south of there. The track is an ode to the bedroom prowess of Mars’ lady, who, based on the single art, looks to be made for sin.

The song is Mars’ first off of ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ (due Dec. 11), and it’s a far cry from the romantic, inspirational borderline-schmaltz that usually lands him atop the charts. His latest offering will likely freak out the ‘Twilight’ fans who went nuts for his lovelorn ballad ‘It Will Rain.’ However, that doesn’t mean ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ isn’t good.

Like ‘Just the Way You Are,’ Bruno loves this particular lady just the way she is, but don’t think for one second that he’s reassuring her of her beauty — he more seems into loving what she does, if you get our drift. The sexy track has a vintage rock n’ roll feel with its “unh!” refrain, and it has a raunchy yet subtle attitude to match, as Mars sings, “Your sex takes me to paradise” just before the hook. The chorus is simple: “You make me feel like I’m locked out of heaven for too long,” Mars repeats. Sounds like someone’s not giving it up!

‘Locked Out of Heaven’ is Bruno Mars meets the Kinks meets, well kink. “I’m born again every time you spend the night,” Mars insists. Still, he’s classy enough not to get graphic or vulgar — because he just doesn’t need to. Still, with a voice like his, even the sleaziest, skeeviest lines somehow sound smooth. Well played, Bruno. Well played.

Bruno Mars to Host + Perform on ‘SNL’

Bruno Mars will be on double-duty as host and performer of NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ on Oct. 20! This will be the ‘Grenade’ crooner’s second time appearing on the show but his first time as the host.

While Mars is not known for his acting skills, we do know that he has a sense of humor. From monkeying around in his ‘Lazy Song‘ video to rocking his pelvis in gold shorts in the ‘Funny or Die’ clip (see below), the singer-guitarist has the comedic chops to hang with the “Not Ready for Primetime” players. Mars follows behind past SNL double-duty artists like Justin Timberlake and Mick Jagger.

In the meantime, Mars will premiere his new single ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ today (Oct. 1) from his upcoming second album ‘Unorthodox Jukebox.’ Mars says the collection is a departure from his sunshine-y, radio-friendly tunes that inhabited his last effort ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans.’

The Grammy-winning artist revealed in his Billboard cover story that he tackles dark subjects of drugs and the flip side of being a pop star. “They made me change a couple of things on [‘Doo-Wops’] and I felt disgusted about that. I didn’t do that on this album,” says Mars. “If I can’t be me doing it, I’m not going to have any fun. If I’m changing things around because people might think it’s a hard pill to swallow — like, ‘Wait a minute, this isn’t the Bruno we know’ — then I’m going to feel like a circus clown onstage, selling something fake.”

As for critics who think he makes sappy music for the pop charts, Mars feels they are tone deaf. “If you can’t hear the sentiment, as sappy as you want to call it, then maybe you’re a piece of s—,” he says. “But if I was getting sappier we’d have a problem, then it would just be mush.”

Bruno Mars’ ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ will hit stores on Dec. 11.

Bruno Mars Covers Billboard, Reveals ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ Due Out December 11

Bruno Mars is the hot topic late in the week. After revealing he will premiere his new single ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ on Monday, Oct. 1 at 7PM via a live online chat, the singer now appears on the cover of Billboard, looking fly in a red button up shirt, gold jewelry and his ever-present aviator shades. The future is so bright, he’s gotta wear shades. It’s also been revealed that he will release his new album ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ on Dec. 11 via Atlantic Records.

“This is me going into the studio and recording and writing whatever I want,” Mars told the trade magazine. “This album represents my freedom.”

The reason that Mars was so adamant about doing his thing was not just due to the fact that he earned the right after the breakout success of ‘Doo-Wops & Hooligans.” He was motivated by other factors as well.

“I’ve had big record label presidents look me in the face and say, ‘Your music sucks, you don’t know who you are, your music is all over the place, and we don’t know how to market this stuff. Pick a lane and come back to us,’” he recalled. “That was disgusting to me, because I’m not trying to be a circus act.”

Nothing like a little “No, you can’t” to make an artist respond with a “Yes, I can” and a great album!

Bruno Mars to Premiere New Single on October 1 Via Live Chat

Bruno Mars, our favorite doo-wop hooligan, has been busy working on new material. He broke away from working long enough to share the title of his upcoming first single and it’s called…

…’Locked Out of Heaven.’

He will premiere the song on Monday, Oct. 1 at 7PM ET via a live chat and Google + hangout session. So mark your calendars, Bruno Mars fans, since new music is on the way imminently.

The crooner also released a 30-second promo video below, hyping the single premiere and capturing candid footage of him in the studio, doing his thang! Doesn’t he look like a blast to work with and hang out with?

Now about ‘Locked Out of Heaven.’ That’s quite a title there, and it doesn’t tell us anything about the tempo, tone or timbre of the song, but we’re sure excited for it. Will it be a ballad? Will it be Mars’ signature, modernized taken on the doo-wop vocal style? Will it be lazy, R&B-flavored pop? There are so many possibilities, given Mars past sonic offerings and his amazing falsetto voice. He’s like this era’s Michael Jackson.

And now we’re musing about the subject matter. Is he in hell? Purgatory? Why can’t he get in heaven? See, you got us thinking, Bruno Mars, all with a simple title share.

Below is Mars’ tweet sharing the good news. Tell us, PopCrushers. What do you think of the title ‘Locked Out of Heaven?’

David Correy Wins Judges Hearts With ‘Just the Way You Are’ on ‘X Factor’

The infinitely stylish David Correy auditioned on tonight’s (Sept. 26) episode of ‘X Factor,’ and he was quite the Travie McCoy lookalike, with his beard and tattoos. Before he sang Bruno Mars‘ ‘Just the Way You Are,’ he shared his heartwarming reason for coming on the show, which was easily one of the most inspiring tales we’ve ever heard on a reality singing competition.

His Brazilian mother got pregnant with him when she was just 14 and gave him up for adoption. He hopes that by appearing on the ‘X Factor,’ his voice will somehow reconnect him with the woman who gave him up. Correy’s dream is that she will get to hear his voice by watching the show. We know — we welled up, too.

He lives in Maryland and loves his adoptive family, but he is curious about his biological mother, and wants to know if she sings. Perhaps he got the gift of music from her. We predict the producers of the show have already installed a digital research team to help locate her so they can reunite, live on ‘X Factor,’ during sweeps.

As for his singing? He had a lovely, high croon, and of course, he looked the part of the rock star. Plus, he has the backstory that the voters and viewing audience loves and roots for.

Brit Brit loved his stage presence, while L.A. Reid celebrated the fact that his “upper register is powerful” and that “he can really sing.”

Correy was awarded a “yes” from every judge, and rightfully so!

We hope his birth mother gets to hear his awesome voice.

Bruno Mars Shows What Kind of Man He Is in Funny or Die Parody Video

Bruno Mars is the man! From swooning the ladies with his voice to being the best-dressed guy at awards shows, the pop crooner is a stud. But if you want further proof of his manliness, check out Bruno’s hilarious Funny or Die parody called ‘Whatta Man.’

“People ask me all the time what it’s like to be Bruno Mars,” he says in the video. “That’s like asking me what it’s like to be a man. A mighty, mighty good man.” Then it segues into the 1993 song ‘Whatta Man’ by Salt ‘N’ Pepa (featuring En Vogue) and we see Bruno showing off his, um, manhood.

In the clip, the ‘Grenade’ singer shoots bad guys, takes showers in his tuxedo, wields nunchucks and saves pets and a pregnant woman from a burning building. Bruno is so comfortable in his manhood, he’s not afraid to cry in front of his girlfriend while watching chick flicks. He also breaks a man’s arm off during an arm-wrestling match and celebrates by giving the bloodied limb to a teenage fan. What a stud!

We also get to see Bruno dance in gold shorts but his moves are kind of lame. He should get Psy to teach him how to do the ‘Gangnam Style’ dance.

Jokes aside, Bruno released the video on Twitter to celebrate the completion of his second album. “Over a year workin on it and now Im finally finished,” he tweeted. “My 2nd album is complete!!!!! Therefore IM THE MAN!!!”

Yes, indeed.

Reed Deming Sails Through ‘X Factor’ Auditions With Bruno Mars’ ‘Grenade’

The season premiere of ‘X Factor‘ is pretty deep into the first hour, and we’ve only seen one person get four consecutive yes’s to make it to the next round. So will 13-year-old Reed Deming be the next to get a “yes?”

Well, when we first met Reed, it was clear he resembled that of an already pretty famous guy. You may have heard of him, his name is Justin Bieber, and the contestants in the contestant holding room of the show picked up on the similarity instantly. They hollered out “Justin!” they sat down to talk about how he has the same hair as Bieber, the kid even dressed like Biebs, but, uh… don’t call him Justin Bieber, okay?

Any young teenager embarking on an audition of this stature deserves some credit. So when Reed started the first few lines of Bruno Mars‘ ‘It Will Rain,’ we were pleasantly surprised. But then his runs started heading towards the “terrible” territory, and Simon Cowell literally stopped the music.

“Do you have anything more stripped down?” asked the judge. When Reed mentioned he had a piano only version of Mars’ ‘Grenade,’ Cowell allowed the audition to continue. The cheshire grin that accompanied Cowell’s face was priceless, and all that was missing was a mustache for him to twirl.

Of course, L.A. Reid compared him to Bieber, Demi Lovato thought he was good, and Britney Spears found him so adorable she just had to say yes. And just like that, Reed received four yes’s and made it to the next round.

Not bad, Reed Bieber. We mean Reed — just Reed.
