Bruno Mars Brings ‘Treasure’ + Reworked ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ to ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’

Bruno Mars can play, sing and perform just about anything, and he never bores anyone. Why? Because even when he performs his own songs, he finds ways to mix it up. On his second night of performances for ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ on Friday (Jan. 11), Mars performed his inescapable, ubiquitous hit ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ — and surprised everyone with it.

Instead of the garage, Police-type feel we’re used to hearing on the track, Mars busted out reggae. As a result, the song had less of an urgent and more of an island feel. It sounded similar to his song ‘Show Me,’ another catchy tune from ‘Unorthodox Jukebox.’

Mars, rocking a conductor-style cap, brown leather jacket and aviator shades, also performed his retro-style jam ‘Treasure.’ He even broke away from his guitar and mic stand to dance! The dude is smooth.

On Thursday night (Jan. 10), Mars performed ‘When I Was Your Man,’ a ballad, so it was smart of him to mix it up and get moving for his Friday night jaunt.

If you’ve got it, Flaunt it! That’s just what crooner Bruno Mars does in his Flaunt magazine cover. The ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ singer strikes a Rat Pack pose on the cover and in the accompanying images, which are black and white, and are styled as though they came from another era.

Dressed in a belted suit on the actual cover and wearing his signature hats and layers of jewelry in the inside images, Mars is a sharp-dressed man. No wonder he is getting profiles in multiple fashion magazines, like InStyle.

The most provocative photo is when the female model sticks her fingers in his mouth, like a gun. It’s certainly enough to get tongues wagging and chatter going on the Interwebs.

The spread is themed to show the slightly badass side of Mars as well. He’s putting up his dukes, throwing bills in the street, flashing his bling, setting fire to paper (of the monetary sort) and looking pensive. Mars has upped his game in terms of image with ‘Unorthodox Jukebox,’ positioning himself as a true leading man.

We’re loving the noir look of this shoot.

Bruno Mars Performs ‘When I Was Your Man’ on ‘Jimmy Kimmel’

Bruno, you cut us to the core! Mars was on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ last night to perform his song ‘When I Was Your Man’ off his hit LP ‘Unorthodox Jukebox.’

Donning a Sacramento Kings hat with piano and organ accompaniment, Bruno’s voice is the star of the show and rightfully so. The vocals on the recorded version of this song are impeccable and his live version on ‘Kimmel’ showcases just how talented Mars is.

Now that we’ve raved about Mr. Mars, we must ask the question. Can you be our man?

Bruno Mars is Man of Style in February InStyle Spread

Bruno Mars InStyle
InStyle

Bruno Mars is a man of style. He always looks fashionable, and that’s why the ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ singer was selected as the Man of Style for the February issue of InStyle. Dressed in array of dark suits, button downs and hats, Mars is looking fine. But he also displayed a sense of humor so delightfully demented that your tummy will hurt from giggling at what he said in the feature.

Mars declared that he is in “beast” mode right now, as opposed to “loverboy” mode, and here’s how he broke it down, in terms of romance and his personal style.

A Bruno Mars date: It’s sweet. Literally. “It starts with me on the floor, hot fudge all over my naked body. Just to see — I like a girl who’s open to anything,” the crooner joked. “I’m kidding. I love to go to the movies or the beach and then dinner.” Sounds like he really is a loverboy and not a beast!

He doesn’t serenade dates: He called that behavior “cornball” and suggested that “no girl wants that.” Uh, Bruno, are you a caveman who was recently discovered and thawed out after centuries encased in ice? Every girl wants that!

What he has to take into account when dressing: His size. He admits that being short makes him mindful of his fashion choices.

He prefers “Pawnshop Gold”: Don’t get him a gilded gift at, say, Macy’s. “I don’t like gold that you can get at the mall,” he said about jewelry with no history. “To me that doesn’t tell a story. I want to see pirate gold, like coin rings and pendants.” Ahoy, matey!

What he wears offstage: Hanes V-Necks, jeans and Chuck Taylors.

He does wear Hawaiian shirts: He admitted to love for a “good aloha shirt” since he is from Hawaii. He also confessed that he gets clowned for wearing them.

Who he wants to record with: Rihanna. “I’d love to get in the studio with Rihanna. I think we’d have a lot of fun.” If it involves going topless (her fetish) and smothering each other with hot fudge (his), it’ll be a party. Fudge and nakey nakes aside, someone get those two in a studio, stat.

PopCrush is rounding up the Top 40 Pop Songs for the month of January to let you know what’s hot in the new year! Our list is based off of what we think is going to be taking over the charts in the first month of 2013. We ranked the songs based on what’s trending, reader favorites, and overall listener reception.

This month, there have been some big changes to our Top 40 Pop Songs list, especially in our Top 5. New to our list and in our No. 3 spot is the Lumineers, who has been topping the charts with their single ‘Ho Hey.’ However, they were no match for Bruno Mars, who’s single ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ jumped from No. 4 to No. 1 on our countdown.

Newcomers to our Top 40 Pop Songs list is One Direction‘s ‘Little Things’ and Maroon 5‘s ‘Daylight.’ Both tracks were just released recently and are already starting to climb the iTunes and Billboards charts. We’re expecting these tracks to be huge hits in 2013 and to fall in our Top 10 pretty soon.

Bruno Mars Hates Being Famous + Wants to Be Like Prince

Bruno Mars is in a bit of a conundrum: He’s one of the biggest names in music since, well, ever … but he hates being famous. Cue the world’ tiniest violin!

“Becoming famous was never what I wanted to do,” he insisted to the McClatchy Tribune (courtesy of Knoxville.com). “There’s a lot of things that come with fame — it’s what people in the limelight have to do,” he added. “I’m like, ‘Can’t I just write and sing?’”

Well, yeah. Just don’t do it on a major label then!

Mars chatted about the difference between songs on ‘Unorthodox Jukebox,’ many of which have a more raw, edgy tone and darker, dirtier themes (see ‘Gorilla,’ ‘Money Make Her Smile’ and ‘Natalie’) than the sunnier ditties on ‘Doowops and Hooligans,’ his warmer debut.

“I love those (older) songs,” he assured. “I’ll stand by them and sing them till the day I die. But an artist has to stay excited to keep on doing it. And the way to stay excited is to keep pushing and to keep experimenting,” he explained. “I feel like I pushed on this record.”

Mars once more lamented on fame and being in the spotlight — and compared himself to another pop legend who shies away from it. “Don’t you love it that Prince doesn’t use Twitter?” Mars said. “Don’t you think he’s somewhere on a unicorn? … If people are going to have an idea of me, I’d just want them to think of a guy who goes in the studio, works hard and jams out.”

DJ Earworm’s 2012 Mash Up: ‘Shine Brighter’

A couple of weeks ago, we heard an epic year-end mash up of over 50 of the hottest songs from 2012′s (brought to us by Pop Danthology), and we weren’t sure how it could have been topped. Well, DJ Earworm (who has been releasing an annual mash up since at least 2008), has just dropped his 2012 mix, and it’s definitely catchy! Titled “United State of Pop: Shine Brighter,” it starts off with Kesha‘s “Die Young,” Maroon 5‘s “One More Night,” and Bruno Mars‘ “Locked Out of Heaven.” Then we hear snippets of Katy Perry‘s “Wide Awake,” and One Direction‘s “What Makes You Beautiful.” Other tunes we hear include Rihanna‘s “Diamonds,” fun.’s “Young,” and Gotye‘s “Somebody to Love.” Crazy how so many different songs can sound so good all at once! Take a listen for yourself above. How does this compare to Pop Danthology’s? Sound off in the comments!

Bruno Mars Talks About the ‘Young Girls’ Who Inspired ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’

We’re a little obssessed with Bruno Mars‘ sophomore record, ‘Unorthodox Jukebox.’ The record has an obvious theme: Girls. Specifically, girls who are bad news. Why did Mars go that route? And why open the album with a ballad, ‘Young Girls,’ about the very ladies who break his little heart?

“That’s the first song on the album [because] I think it really shows you what this album is going to be, and just where I was when I started this album,” Mars explained to MTV News. “Everything’s been so new to me, man, I feel like the world’s been watching it. Watching me go on tour, watching me perform on TV … but I [also] feel this is something everyone can relate to: There’s a moment in your life where you start going out every night, and it’s so fun, but then you start to lose yourself; you get lost in the sauce.” Those ‘Liquor Store’ blues got you down, Bruno? He added, “So, this song is the same sentiment as ‘Lookin’ For Love In All The Wrong Places.’ It’s another confession.”

Mars, who’s working on a video for the track, explained that the song encompasses the major theme not just of his new album, but most of his life: Girls. “You know what? I sing about girls, ever since I was this big, that’s what I do,” he chuckled. “I’m not there yet … to sing about politics and, you know, this is what I want to sing about, and this is what I know.” He also sings about strippers, for those of you keeping score.

He even snuck in a 2 Chainz reference. “I’m not going to preach what I don’t know,” the diminutive Mars admitted. “As much as I love ‘All I Want For My Birthday …’ this is where I’m at.” It’s okay, Bruno — we like you here!
