Azealia Banks Goes to War with Rap Newcomer Angel Haze on Twitter

Azealia Banks is Twitter beefing again — this time against up-and-coming rapper Angel Haze. According to The, the bickering is over a tweet the ’212′ rapper made about Haze not being a native New Yorker.

“Seriously, if you were not born and raised in NY…. DON’T CLAIM NY. YOU ARE NOT A NEW YORKER,” wrote Banks. This prompted Haze, who is a Detroit native, to respond with several tweets threatening to physically hurt Banks, which, unceremoniously, have been deleted from her feed.

The cat fight on the social media network continued with each rapper taking shots at each other’s physical appearance, lyrical skills and who is the bigger lesbian.

Although Haze denies getting rid of her tweets, she did, however, drop a scathing diss song just hours after their Twitter feud. The Diplo-produced ‘On the Edge’ features Haze ripping into Banks. “B—- I got ammo on you / B—-, you don’t want war,” she warns.

Back on Twitter, Banks seems unfazed by Haze’s diss song. “YOU WANT THE P—- SOOOO BADDDDDD @ANGELHAZE LOLOL..this diss track is not even hot!!! lmfaooooooooooo !!!!!!” she tweeted.

In addition, Diplo has distanced himself from the fracas. “Diplo just calls me and tells me she wrote that track months ago and he had nothing to do with it,” Banks revealed on her feed.

Banks also added that she will drop a new song, ‘No Problems,’ today (Jan. 4) in response to Haze’s song. “Lol I def used that energy to write a fly new jam tho. It’s not even really a diss anymore! Haha !!!” she writes. “Just straight fly uptown NYC s—!!”

To be continued…

Did Beyonce Tease ‘Ratchet’ Single With Lady Gaga + Azealia Banks?

Instagram (2)

Earrings and shoes. Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Azealia Banks, all super popular pop stars known for their unique and enviable fashion sense, have several closets full of those accessories. However, the other day, Bey shared a shot of big hoop earrings with the word “Ratchet” inside of them next to a pair of purple, leopard print, hairy-looking loafers. It set the web abuzz with rumors that it’s a tease and a hint of a collabo between these two female titans of pop and an up ‘n coming “It” rapper. Bey? Gaga? Azealia? On one song? The world would stop spinning on its axis.

Bey wore the earrings in her retro Houston Rockets photo. Gaga wore similar “Ratchet” hoops in a candid shot in November.

Billboard reports that Gaga told little monsters during a chat on her social networking site that she may release a song called ‘Ratchet’ or ‘Tea’ as the lead ‘ARTPOP’ single in January. Whoa, this is all moving a little fast.

How does Miss Banks factor into all of this? Well, she also revealed that she and Gaga worked on a song, remotely and digitally. Billboard further reports that there are two tracks; one is called ‘Red Flame’ and the other is ‘Ratchet.’ Banks had indicated that the songs are Gaga’s, to do with as she wishes.

So you are probably wondering if this is a Gaga song or a Bey song? It sounds like it might be leaning towards ‘ARTPOP,’ given the chat. Also, Gaga said that it was taking a long time since she wrote all her own songs and created them from nothing with friends … like Bey and Azealia?

Ma Monster also tweeted back in October that there would be a continuation of her and Bey’s track ‘Telephone,’ which was later deleted. When a lil’ monster asked if there would be a reprise, she tweeted “fact.”

If this is indeed a go, Miss Banks just got herself an upgrade, too!

Our heads are spinning over this. And to think it has nothing do with ‘Cake,’ which had been teased and then … stopped.

Azealia Banks Kicks Off 2013 With New Song ‘BBD’

Azealia Banks BBD

Azealia Banks starts the new year on an energetic note with her new single, ‘BBD,’ which stands for “Bad B—-es Doit.” The song is not from her upcoming album, ‘Broke With Expensive Taste,’ but it’s a preview of things to come from the Harlem rapper.

Produced by Apple Juice Kid and Sup Doodle, the music is hectic, bass heavy and tailor-made for the kids who like to rave in the clubs. It’s a little harder than Banks’ previous efforts, which tend to be sassy and cheeky.

On the song, Banks spits women empowerment rhymes and references ’90s rap group Bell Biv DeVoe in the process. “I be wilding wit my b—-es / I be stylin’ with my b—-es / Pretty eyes and long extensions — they smilin’ in all them pictures / I be rising with my b—-es / Riding with my b—-es / We the finest of them b—-es / We diamonds — it’s diamond district!” she raps.

Yep, Ms. Banks is poison to the haters when it comes to spitting her hardcore lyrics. Azealia Banks’ album ‘Broke with Expensive Taste’ is due to arrive on shelves Feb. 12.

Azealia Banks Talks Fashion + Quitting Rap

Leave it to “It” girl rapper Azealia Banks to make some polarizing and inflammatory comments about her status as a fashion darling and her future as a rapper, all before her debut ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’ even lands. Banks is nothing if not a cultural lightning rod, and she’s already slammed the fashion industry, which embraced her on the quick, and put an expiration date on rapping.

Her recent chat with Hypetrak TV should have her manager wringing their hands over having to deal with the fallout from her statements.

Regarding the quick embrace that the fashion industry wrapped her in, she said, “I think that too much fashion attention as an artist can actually smother you. And it can actually really, really distract from your music. And I kind of almost got there with it, you know what I mean?”

She continued, “It was like, fashion, fashion, fashion, fashion, fashion. And I was like this fashion darling. I was putting out records… and the only record anyone would listen to was ’212.’ That was the only Azealia Banks record that anyone knew…”

Hey, Azealia, there’s nothing wrong with another arm of culture opening doors for you, like fashion can. It’s called layers and levels of exposure. Hell, a MAC lipstick endorsement is pretty sweet, too.

She didn’t diss Alexander Wang (behind the diffusion line she is the face of), or the U.K. fashion line ASOS.

“I think that fashion and style is one thing, but I think that branding can really hurt you as an artist, especially if it’s not real,” she said. “Like, I really like Alexander Wang. I really shop at ASOS, so it makes sense. You can very easily get sucked up by the fashion world, because they bring artists in to make themselves look a certain way, and then as soon as someone new comes up, they’ve completely forgotten about you. They’re so fickle. If you place your faith in the fashion world, you will get let down.”

Those weren’t the only high-voltage comments she made. She already revealed that rapping has a shelf life for her, which feels a bit premature. “I’d like to eventually stop rapping,” she said, even though ‘Broke With Expensive Taste’ is dropping in early 2013. “That’s the honest truth. One day, I don’t want to rap anymore, because I think it’s easy and kinda tacky. It’s very unlady-like. I like it, but I think I am going to get tired of it.”

Wait ’til Nicki Minaj or Lil Kim hear those comments. Perhaps those nemeses can unite over a common enemy who dissed their profession? Nah, Banks, who suggested that her fans are all young and gay, is likely just making fiery statements to keep interest in her high.

Banks further declared, “I want to get two albums out, and get all the urban stuff, like rap music, out. Or whatever ideas I have in me out and into fruition, and go back to school and take voice lessons and do contemporary jazz. I dunno. I definitely don’t see myself as a rapper forever.”

There’s nothing wrong with having goals. But we have to admit all this talk does make her sound a little — actually, a lot — entitled before she’s even released a full-length.

Azealia Banks Accuses Coldplay’s Manager of Domestic Abuse

Azealia Banks is one artist who never bites her tongue especially on Twitter. The ’212′ rapper made a startling claim on her timeline that Coldplay’s manager, Dave Holmes, who has been rumored to be her boyfriend, has been repeatedly abusing her.

According to BET, Banks fired off several tweets on Christmas Day (they have since been deleted) revealing an incident of domestic abuse between her and Holmes. “Coldplay’s manager Dave Holmes is a piece of s—. Second time he has put his f—-ing hands on me,” she wrote.

Banks, who was pop music’s “It” girl in 2012, did leave a few missives behind that suggests the root of the problem in their relationship. “A Jealous Man is a Dangerous man,” she tweeted, followed by, “Karma will get you sir.”

Several members of her K—Brigade (aka her fans) tweeted their support for the young Harlem rapper. One follower wrote, “S—, I ain’t afraid to go windmill on a motherf—er for my girl.” Fellow rapper Action Bronson also threw in his allegiance for Banks. “LET ME KNOW WHO I NEED TO CHOKE OUT BOO,” he tweeted. For those of you who might not know who Bronson is, he’s a burly rapper that can surely bring the pain if his assistance is needed.

In any case, we hope that Banks separate herself from her rumored boyfriend and get a restraining order if possible. Banks should just focus on herself and on her new album in 2013.

Best New Artist – 2012 PopCrush Music Awards

PopCrush Awards

While some of the artists nominated in our Best New Artist category have been around for a few years, they made their big breaks into the mainstream pop scene in 2012. Sharp-tongued rapper Azealia Banks, spunky British songstress Cher Lloyd, silky smooth crooner Frank Ocean and Jay-Z protégé Rita Ora are some of the entertainers in the running for the 2012 PopCrush Music Award for Best New Artist, with a few other contenders as well.

Azealia Banks released her sexual-charged dance-hop hit ’212′ in 2011, but the ‘Liquorice’ rapper really made a name for herself in 2012. From her ’1991′ LP and ‘Fantasea’ mixtape to her fashion-forward and innovative music videos, Banks has been everywhere this year, covering magazines with her beautiful mermaid hair and landing gigs at festivals like Coachella. She’s even gotten enough recognition on her own to turn down an opening spot on Nicki Minaj‘s tour, without even a bat of her sky-high lashes.

Former ‘X Factor‘ contestant Cher Lloyd has also been blowing up in a major way this year, especially because of her massive hit ‘Want U Back,’ which took over the airwaves in the summer of 2012. Her debut album ‘Sticks + Stones’ impacted within the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, and her follow-up single ‘Oath’ has become a BFF anthem for the 21st century. On top of all this, she’s been playing gigs all over the States while still making time for her fiance and her pet pooches.

Ed Sheeran is also nominated for Best New Artist in PopCrush’s 2012 Music Awards. Not only did the adorable redheaded Brit have a string of his own successful singles off of his debut album ‘+’ this year — 2011′s ‘The A Team’ and ‘Lego House’ gained tons of momentum this year, while ‘Drunk,’ ‘Small Bump,’ and ‘Give Me Love’ are picking up airplay now — but he also wrote songs like One Direction‘s ‘Little Things’ and ‘Everything Has Changed’ (he’s also featured on the track) for Taylor Swift‘s ‘Red’ album.

Meanwhile, Frank Ocean might not be a new name to all of you, but he certainly owned 2012 with his incredible, critically-acclaimed debut album, ‘channel ORANGE.’ His thoughtful and deeply personal songwriting is a breath of fresh air in mainstream pop, with tracks like ‘Thinkin’ Bout You’ and ‘Sweet Life’ addressing everything from the hardships of love to the socioeconomic and cultural differences within our country. Mix these solo accomplishments with a feature on Jay-Z and Kanye West‘s ‘No Church in the Wild,’ and you’ve got one of the hottest and most buzzed-about newcomers of 2012.

Closing out our list of nominees are Lana Del Rey, Psy and Rita Ora. Del Rey took the pop world by storm with her smoky and sultry vocals. In 2012 alone, she dropped her debut album (at least as Lana Del Rey) ‘Born to Die,’ with songs like the title track, ‘Video Games,’ ‘National Anthem’ and ‘Blue Jeans’ taking off. She also released her ‘Paradise’ EP, which includes her newer hits like ‘Ride’ and ‘Cola.’ Del Rey is a perfect example of the ever-changing state of pop, as she isn’t worried about nailing the Top 40 formula more than getting her unique voice out there.

On the other hand, we’ve got Korean rapper Psy and Rita Ora, both of whom have had Top 40 hits this year, with the former really taking over the charts. Whether you like it or not, Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ has become one of the definitive tracks of 2012, with its bouncy beat and sing-along chorus. Psy, who is now under the same guidance as Justin Bieber, even started a dance craze with ‘Gangnam Style,’ and don’t even get us started on the video!

Meanwhile, Kosovo-born beauty Rita Ora, who has been taken under the wing of Jay-Z, had a huge year in 2012, busting into the spotlight with her single ‘How We Do (Party).’ Ora, who has also seen her singles ‘R.I.P.’ and ‘Shine Ya Light’ pick up tons of listeners, has now become a household name thanks to her distinctive vocals, amazing style, gorgeous looks and immense amounts of talent and star power.

Azealia Banks Goes for the Bold on ASOS Cover

Azealia Banks ASOS

Azealia Banks covers the January 2013 issue of ASOS and she goes for the bold in richly textured attire.

Check out the pleated leather skirt, which looks divine on her, as well as that clingy, cobalt, velvet dress. Banks is a street style queen but she doesn’t like being referred to as such.

In the accompanying feature, the rapper talks about her music and how she is going out on a limb.

“I’m taking a lot of risks with this record, but music is so personal. I’m nervous, I’m excited, and there’s this crazy adrenaline. I’m sleeping in the studio, I have knots in my throat and I’m so anxious, I’m a nervous wreck,” she said about her album.

Well, she takes risks with her attire, so we fully expect her to do the same with her tunes.

Banks also believes her foray into fashion and her newly-minted status as a style icon is accidental. “I feel like it’s created this thing for me to stand on that I didn’t even intend to have as a musician, but when it’s time to make your album, you make your album,” she said.

Clearly, Banks has her priorities in line.

That comes as a byproduct of being a thinker who gets lost in thought. She also has worked hard enough to create the Banks brand. Cha-ching.

“Sometimes I feel like I float in and out of different personalities,” she admits. “As a
kid, I was a big thinker — I was always daydreaming of being rich. It’s kind of weird, I feel like I’ve willed this life. I feel like I’ve done enough work and enough music and now Azealia Banks is a name. I’m not just some up-and-coming person. I feel I can do anything right now, with concentration, will and hard work.”

She also considers herself fashionable, but not a fashion queen.

Well, the ’212′ rapper reigns supreme in this amazing, boldly-colored ASOS photos. Art imitates life here.

Azealia Banks Reveals Party Style Secrets

Azealia Banks is stunning without much help, but she knows how to turn it out when she needs to. The ’212′ rapper revealed her secrets to her high fashion yet streetwise style in a new clip for ASOS. What’s her biggest trick?

One that she shares with Kesha! “My party makeup is glitter, glitter, glitter, glitter,” she gushed. “I love glitter! “I like it hard and rocky on your eyes so it looks like foil.” The Naomi Campbell doppelganger doesn’t just stop with sparkles in terms of shiny stuff. She keeps her hair and nails shiny, too.

“A good styling tip is make sure you always do your hair and your nails because if your hair and nails are done then it doesn’t matter what you have on,” she noted. “Someone will forgive you if your hair and nails are nice and shiny.” It makes sense that Banks would focus on cosmetics, too, since she created her own MAC lipstick and is notorious for her colorful wigs.

Azealia’s go-to outfit for parties is simple, despite the fact that she’s typically a glamazon on red carpets. “My last minute party outfit is a blouse and a skirt,” she said. “Even though I know I look like a kid in a blouse and a skirt, if I don’t have time to think then that’s what I’ll wear,” she giggled. “If you show up inappropriately dressed for a party then you just have to work it,” she sassed. “You’re already there, you are there for a reason what else are you going to do? Leave? Pump it, do it.” Words to live by!

Why Are Web Artists Upset With Rihanna + Azealia Banks?

Rihanna Azealia Banks

Creators and fans of the visual aesthetic known by some as seapunk are speaking out against Rihanna and Azealia Banks, whom they say ripped off the fashion and design trend during recent performances and music videos.

Buzzfeed compiled a list of angry tweets and visual evidence, most of which is centered around RiRi’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ performance this weekend, where she and her band played ‘Diamonds’ in front of a green screen displaying trippy digital images. That was followed one day later by the release of Banks’ ‘Atlantis’ video, which utilized a similar visual concept, with Greek columns, ocean waves and animated 3D designs popping up behind the singer.

Both resembled the art produced by Jerome of LOL Boys and many other web performers. After ‘SNL,’ Jerome tweeted, “Rihanna I see you,” and yesterday he sent out the presumably sarcastic message, “#teamriri #teamazealia.”

While it may be unfortunate that some innovative artists’ styles have been borrowed and taken into the mainstream, that’s pretty much how pop culture has always worked, isn’t it? Below, compare Rihanna’s ‘SNL’ performance and Banks’ music video with a 2010 video from Jerome’s LOL Boys. Do you think she and her team stole this visual aesthetic?

Azealia Banks Gets Styled by ASOS in ‘Fierce’ Video

Azealia Banks may be more famous for her stunning good looks than for her music (which is actually great) — and she doesn’t seem to mind. The New York native struts, writhes and grinds her stuff in her new ‘Fierce’ video for ASOS.

Banks models the line’s wares and doesn’t do much else, but heck if she doesn’t look gorgeous. We especially love a blue dress that she rocks in a dimly lit room as well as a deep crimson blazer she pairs with a black corset. You don’t need a story when you look this good!

Azealia Banks Talks Kanye West + Lady Gaga Collaborations

Azealia Banks is having a phenomenal year so far with several magazine covers, a hot mixtape and a lipstick launch under her belt. The Harlem native also collaborated with two big music superstars — Kanye West and Lady Gaga.

In an interview with Brazil’s Mix TV (via Rap-Up), Banks spoke about her experience with Yeezy in the studio. “Working with Kanye was a lot of fun,” she recalled. “I just kind of went out to Hawaii for vacation, and he has a studio out there and he was just like, ‘You should really come to the studio.’ So I went to the studio and just worked it out.”

As for her collaboration with Mother Monster, Banks didn’t get a chance to really connect with her. “I worked with Lady Gaga, but I worked with Lady Gaga from afar. We worked via email and via Internet,” she explains. “We have a song called ‘Red Flame’ and we also have a song called ‘Ratchet,’ but I don’t know what she’s doing with it. She’s going to release it when she wants to release it.”

Hopefully, Lady Gaga will add the two songs to her upcoming LP ‘ARTPOP.’

Meanwhile, Banks is crafting music for her own album titled ‘Broke with Expensive Taste.’ The collection is scheduled to arrive in stores in February.
