About to Pop: Rihanna, Jessie J + More Singles

It’s been a couple of weeks since our last About to Pop competition, but our most recent winner was newcomer Nikki Williams! Her single ‘Glowing’ garnered an overwhelming 65% of the fan votes before the holidays, beating out artists like Pink and Green Day for a spot on PopCrush’s nationwide radio show – a proper congrats is in order for Ms. Williams and all of her fans!

The first About to Pop competition of 2013 will see Rihanna, Jessie J plus more artists going head-to-head for 20+ spins on PopCrush’s weekend radio countdown. The ‘Unapologetic’ songstress is in the running with her David Guetta-produced single ‘Right Now,’ a blood-pumping, club jam will get you dancing and pumped for the New Year. Meanwhile, Jessie J fans can vote on her midtempo, R&B love ballad ‘Silver Lining (Crazy ‘Bout You…),’ from the acclaimed film ‘Silver Linings Playbook.’

But RiRi and Jessie aren’t the only singers you can vote for, as Marina and the Diamonds, Olly Murs and Mike Posner are also competing. Marina’s Diamonds will have the chance to  teach ‘How to Be a Heartbreaker’ if they can secure the win, while Olly Murs lovers can vote for the catchy crooner’s ‘Troublemaker’ track, featuring Flo Rida.

Finally, in the wake of the tragedy that occurred in Newtown, Conn. on Dec. 14, singer-songwriter Mike Posner wrote the touching tribute ‘Heaven’ for the victim’s family, our last song in this week’s About to Pop.

Listen to all of the nominated singles below and vote for your favorite once per hour until the poll closes on Jan. 14 at 3PM EST. Good luck!

About to Pop: Pink, Nikki Williams + More Singles

Animals were definitely on the prowl last week. Kesha‘s devoted fans voted her newest ‘Warrior’ single, ‘C’Mon,’ into the About to Pop winner’s circle. Kesha’s hungry legion of listeners will be pleased to know that ‘C’Mon’ will receive 20+ spins on PopCrush’s radio show this weekend! Check out a list of stations where you can tune in by clicking here.

With a new week upon us, it’s time for a fresh quintet of About to Pop hopefuls. Pink is leading the competition this week with her third single off of ‘The Truth About Love,’ her collabo with fun. frontman Nate Ruess, ‘Just Give Me a Reason.’ Although Ruess was hesitant about cutting a track with the pop powerhouse, Pink is obviously very convincing, and the duo’s vocals blend harmoniously as they sing about mending a broken relationship on the simple piano ballad.

Pink is followed by newcomer Nikki Williams, a South African transplant that we recently had the pleasure of watching perform live, and holy hell, does this girl bring it. Her new single ‘Glowing’ shows off her vast vocal range, spanning from delicate, high notes to booming, powerful belting. The love song also delivers a building, blood-pumping, synth-pop beat that will make you want to get up and cut loose on the dance floor.

Just like the aforementioned nominees, the rest of the artists in this week’s fan-voted competition is a mix of old and new musicians.

Veteran rockers Green Day are up for their ¡Tré! single ‘The Forgotten,’ a softer, piano-rock ballad that also appears on the ‘Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ soundtrack. Meanwhile, British chanteuse Jessie Ware made her breakthrough in the U.K. this year, and she’s become an obsession of ours here in the States too. Ware’s soulful vocals sounds beyond gorgeous on her glossy, drum-driven single ‘Wildest Moments.’ And closing it all out are alt hit makers Lifehouse and pop songbird Natasha Bedingfield. They teamed up to sing about conquering the odds on the band’s new single ‘Between the Raindrops,’ a moody, pop-rock track that also boasts some country flair.

Which song will you vote for this week? Listen to all of the nominees below and cast a vote once per hour until the poll closes next week on Dec. 24 at 3PM EST.

About to Pop: Kesha, Olly Murs + More Singles

Congratulations to Ed Sheeran and all of his fans that voted for him in last week’s About to Pop poll! The British singer-songwriter’s latest single ‘Give Me Love’ will receive 20+ spins on PopCrush’s weekend radio on Saturday (Dec. 15) and Sunday (Dec. 16). Check out a list of stations where you can tune in by clicking here!

This week, Kesha, Olly Murs, Melanie Amaro, the Weeknd and Britt Nicole are competing against one another for About to Pop glory. Who will come out on top?!

‘Warrior’ queen Kesha is nominated for her new single ‘C’Mon,’ a synth-heavy track off of her 2012 LP with production credits from Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco. With an intro reminiscent of Bruno Mars‘ ‘Just the Way You Are,’ ‘C’Mon’ is a little bit bubblegum, a little bit dance-y, and a little bit electro, and with some ultra fried, super sassy raps from Kesha, it’s sure to be another smash hit with her Animals.

Meanwhile, Olly Murs is giving Ms. Sebert a run for her money with his Flo Rida-assisted track ‘Troublemaker.’ The beat and overall tempo of the insanely catchy pop song kind of makes our minds wander to Maroon 5‘s ‘Misery,’ with funkier elements like the guitar and jam blocks taking hold of our auditory senses. Murs’ smooth, R&B-twinged vocals will also have you racing to learn the words so you can sing along.

Meanwhile, fans of ‘X Factor‘ champ Melanie Amaro will undoubtedly be voting for her new, violin-laden single ‘Long Distance,’ a midtempo ballad about being lovesick for someone that you can’t be near. Then there’s Canadian singer-songwriter the Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, who will leave women weak in the knees with his unbelievable vocal performance on the moody track ‘Wicked Games.’ Finally, we’ve got newcomer Britt Nicole and her sweet-as-candy, synthed-out love song ‘Gold.’

Who will you vote for this week? Kesha, Olly, Melanie, the Weeknd, or Britt? Listen to all 5 tracks below and vote for your favorite every hour until the poll closes on Dec. 17 at 3PM EST. Good luck!

About to Pop: Will.i.am, Ed Sheeran + More Singles

While the title of her song may suggest differently, Christina Aguilera is no fool, because she’s managed to garner some of those most loyal fans out there! Thanks to tons of votes from her army of devoted listeners, Xtina’s new Blake Shelton-featured single ‘Just a Fool’ will receive 20+ spins on PopCrush’s radio show this weekend! To check out a list of stations where you can tune in, click here

In this week’s About to Pop competition, will.i.am and Britney Spears are kicking things off with their collaborative party jam ‘Scream & Shout.’ The dancey, electropop song starts out with some simple rhymes from Brit, who sounds a lot like Nicki Minaj’s Roman with her British-laced accent. The uptempo beat continuously builds throughout the Auto-tuned “oh wee oh” chorus, all the way up until the ‘Gimme More’ sample of “it’s Britney b—-,” which totally makes the entire song by the way.

Following the heavy club beats of will and Brit is Ed Sheeran‘s ‘Give Me Love,’ which is on the complete opposite side of the pop music spectrum. With his soft, acoustic strumming becoming the main musical focal point, Sheeran’s delicately beautiful voice and songwriting prowess really take center stage as he sings, “Give a little time to me or burn this out / We’ll play hide and seek to turn this around / All I want is the taste that your lips allow / My, my, my, my, oh give me love,” on the heartfelt refrain.

Austin Mahone, Gavin DeGraw and fun. are also in the running this week, so will and Ed fans will have to stay on their toes with votes this week! Austin Mahone is in the running for his bubblegum, Biz Markie-inspired tune ‘Say You’re Just a Friend,’ featuring Flo Rida, and Gavin’s up for the About to Pop win his bluesy, piano-centric ballad ‘Soldier.’ Finally, fun. are giving it another go with ‘Carry On,’ another swelling and rousing sing-along from the trio.

Listen to all of this week’s About to Pop tracks below and vote for the song you like best once per hour until the poll closes on Dec. 10 at 3PM EST.

About to Pop: Maroon 5, Christina Aguilera + More Singles

Adam Levine Christina Aguilera William Nate Ruess Megan and Liz

Congratulations to Owl City! Adam Young’s band scored the most fan votes in last week’s About to Pop poll, ousting superstar competitors like Taylor Swift and Usher! This means Owl City’s winning track, ‘Shooting Star,’ will receive 20+ spins on PopCrush’s nationwide radio show this weekend! Check out a list of stations where you can tune in here.

This week, we’ve got two coaches from ‘The Voice‘ facing off for the About to Pop win! Adam Levine‘s band Maroon 5 is in the running with their new ‘Overexposed’ single, ‘Daylight.’ The sweet love song, which finds Levine singing in a much deeper manner than we’re used to on the verses, has a mellower vibe than the upbeat, Reggae-influenced ‘One More Night,’ but still delivers the band’s infectious pop-rock sound.

But can Levine and his band dominate over the diva that is Xtina? Christina Aguilera is nominated this week with her Blake Shelton-featured single (well, we guess it’s technically three ‘Voice’ judges competing then!) ‘Just a Fool,’ a soulful slow jam off of her latest LP ‘Lotus’ that has touch of country mixed in courtesy of her Southern counterpart. Do you think it tops ‘Moves Like Jagger,’ the duet Xtina did with M5?

‘The Voice’ heayweights have some stiff competition elsewhere though. Will.i.am teams up with his girl Britney Spears for their nominated single ‘Scream and Shout,’ where Brit goes a little Nicki Minaj with a British-esque accent on the pre-chorus of the high-energy club track. Meanwhile, fun. are in the running with ‘Carry On,’ a powerful sing-along that sounds like something you’d hear a bunch of neighborhood guys chanting during last call at their local Irish pub.

Finally, we’ve got newcomers Megan and Liz, who you might’ve seen performing during the 2012 Thanksgiving Day Parade. The girls sang ‘Bad for Me’ atop a float, and they’re nominated with that very same track — a catchy, bubbly pop song about falling for the wrong guy.

Which track are you feeling the most? Vote for Maroon 5, Christina, will, fun. or Megan and Liz below — remember you can vote once per hour until the poll closes at 3PM EST on Monday, Dec. 3.

About to Pop: Taylor Swift, Owl City + More Singles

Sean Kingston seriously killed it in last week’s About to Pop poll! His fans voted non-stop and were able to secure his new single ‘Rum and Raybans,’ featuring Cher Lloyd, as the winning About to Pop track! You know what this means… Kingston’s club jam will receive 20+ spins on our national radio show this weekend — check out a list of stations where you can tune in here.

This week, Taylor Swift is leading the About to Pop competition with her pitch-switchin’, dubstep-infused ‘Red’ track, ‘I Knew You Were Trouble.’ She debuted the song at the 2012 American Music Awards on Nov. 18, and the harder, electropop chorus on the “this guy’s no good” anthem is a big change from the more lighthearted beats we’ve heard from her in the past… and we mean that in the best possible way!

Then we’ve got Owl City, who is up for About to Pop glory with ‘Shooting Star.’ The sweet, super synthy tune finds Adam Young’s delicate vocals building up until the chorus, when he really belts it while pounding the keys. But Usher is also in the running, so Owl City fans will have to stay on their toes for voting! The R&B crooner is nominated with ‘Euphoria,’ his hyped-up, Swedish House Mafia-produced club banger that, once again, showcases his unbelievable voice, whether he’s singing breathy falsetto or really bringing the power.

Closing out this week’s About to Pop are two newcomers to the mainstream scene, Chris Richardson and Sam and the Womp. Richardson’s smooth, R&B-twinged vocals standout on his upbeat track ‘Joy & Pain,’ which is slightly reminiscent of Bruno Mars‘ sound. He also recruits Tyga for a verse on the tune, which chronicles the ups and downs of falling in love.

Finally, Sam and the Womp are bringing the party to this week’s About to Pop poll with their energetic, horn-heavy track ‘Bom Bom.’ It’s crazy catchy and literally impossible not to dance along with. Go ahead. Crank ‘Bom Bom’ up and try not to at least bop your head with the beat!

Check out all of this week’s nominated About to Pop tracks below and vote on your favorite every hour until the poll closes on Nov. 26 at 3PM EST!

About to Pop: Cody Simpson, Sean Kingston + More Singles

Way to go, Directioners! All of your votes landed One Direction in first place for last week’s About to Pop competition. You know what that means! The super cute quintet’s nominated ballad ‘Little Things’ will receive 20+ spins on PopCrush’s radio show this weekend — check out a list of stations where you can tune in by clicking here.

This week, Cody Simpson and Sean Kingston are both nominated with fresh singles. Simpson’s breathy vocals go down smoother than honey on his feel-good, electropop track ‘Wish U Were Here,’ for which he also recruited pint-sized rapper Becky G for a sassy verse. Meanwhile, Kingston brought on Becky G’s ‘Oath’ collaborator Cher Lloyd for his latest single ‘Rum and Raybans.’ The uptempo, Reggae-twinged dance track is packed with pounding snares and urgent synthesizers, and also features an awesome breakdown verse from Ms. Lloyd.

Meanwhile, further down the list, we’ve got nominated tracks from No Doubt, Bruno Mars and Outasight. Gwen, Tony, Adrian and Tom are in the running with their ‘Push and Shove’ single ‘Looking Hot,’ the video for which found the band in some hot water. However, don’t let the controversial clip overshadow the tune itself, which really packs a punch with pulsing synth, heavy guitars and rockin’ drums, as well as a Reggae breakdown.

But ND might have a hard time beating out Bruno Mars, whose second ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’ single ‘Young Girls’ is a semi-symphonic, midtempo track warning against the perils of “young, wild girls.” Once again, Mars keeps to his signature blend of soulful R&B and pop while showing off his unbelievable vocals. Finally, Outasight’s ‘I’ll Drink to That’ is another one to watch out for, as it is ridiculously catchy and will work its way into your brain in no time. The crooner almost has a Jason Mraz-type sound on the midtempo party song, which speaks to the tough times Americans are now facing and how laughs, friends and a bit of booze can help soften our hardships, if only temporarily.

So, who will you vote for this round? Listen to all of this week’s nominated About to Pop tracks below and vote for your favorite one per hour until Monday, Nov. 19 at 3PM EST.

About to Pop: One Direction, Sammy Adams + More Singles

Ciara took her ferocious dancing feet and completely squashed the competition in last week’s About to Pop poll. The R&B diva’s latest single, the fast-paced, ’90s-inspired dance jam ‘Got Me Good,’ garnered more than 65% of the fan votes, meaning all of you can get groove on to the club-ready track this weekend when it receives 20+ spins on PopCrush’s radio show! Check out a list of stations where you can tune in here.

This week, One Direction are competing with their new single ‘Little Things,’ which finds the quintet slowing things down for a more heartfelt, acoustic-driven ballad — needless to say, it’s a big change from the high-energy feel of their past hits ‘What Makes You Beautiful,’ ‘One Thing’ and ‘Live While We’re Young.’ They actually recruited their talented friend Ed Sheeran to write the soft and soulful love song, and the five dreamboats take turns with the emotional lyrics while Niall strums on guitar.

Rapper-singer Sammy Adams is also competing this week with his grimy electro, hip-pop tune ‘All Night Longer.’ As the catchy grinding guitars build towards the chorus, Adams rhymes in celebration of libations, before he picks up singing duties on the swervy, (perfect drunken) chant-along chorus. It’s a total party jam and is the perfect addition to your pre-gaming party list (only for the 21+ folks, of course).

But the boy band and Adams have some killer competitors. Singles from vocal virtuoso Kelly Clarkson, dynamite electro trio Swedish House Mafia and indie-folk outfit Of Monsters and Men are all nominated this week, so things should get interesting.

Clarkson fans are getting another chance to vote for her latest synthpop single ‘Catch My Breath,’ which of course, is impossible not to sing along with. On the other hand, EDM lovers will be pleased to know that Swedish House Mafia are in the running for their glossy, blood-pumping house anthem ‘Don’t You Worry Child.’ And finally, Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men have been taking off thanks to their single ‘Little Talks,’ which finds the beautiful female and male voices of lead co-singers Nanna and Raggi trading verses over an uptempo, pop-friendly, horn-fueled folk beat.

So, which track has won you over? Listen to all of this week’s nominated singles and vote for your favorite below. The poll will close next Monday, Nov. 12, at 3PM EST, and remember you can vote once per hour!

About to Pop: Carly Rae Jepsen, Ciara + More Singles

The Ready Set have taken our latest About to Pop poll by storm (no Hurricane Sandy puns intended)! Jordan Witzigreuter and his backing band won last week’s poll with a whopping 65% of the votes, beating out competitors like Taylor Swift and Alicia Keys. This means their single ‘Give Me Your Hand (Best Song Ever)’ will receive 20+ spins on PopCrush’s radio show this weekend! Check out a list of stations where you can tune in by clicking here.

Wondering what’s in store for this week? Carly Rae Jepsen is in the running with her synthy single ‘This Kiss,’ an upbeat, dancey, sugary sweet piece of electro-pop ear candy. In order to win, though, Carly Rae Jepsen will have to beat out Ciara, who is bringing it back to the ’90s with her sassy schoolgirl raps on the club-ready, R&B-infused dance floor jam ‘Got Me Good.’

But even CRJ and Cici aren’t safe from the monster tunes they’re up against.

Superstar Nicki Minaj is also nominated with ‘Va Va Voom,’ on which the Young Money artist exhibits her singing chops more than her rap skills. It’s a more mellow, midtempo beat for the electro-loving Harajuku Barbie, but she still brings the heat with mile-a-minute verses and a catchy-as-hell hook. Then there’s our favorite anti-diva Kelly Clarkson, whose uptempo, building single ‘Catch My Breath’ is a dreamy, powerful, ’80s-esque tune that displays Clarkson’s awesome songwriting and even more amazing vocals.

Finally, we’ve got Pitbull, and Mr. 305 never disappoints in the party department. He’s nominated for ‘Don’t Stop the Party,’ a blood-pumping Latino-Eurodance fusion track from the rapper, where he gets us roused and ready to go with big horns, hip-swinging piano, and a chant-along bilingual chorus.

So, who has won you over this week? Perk up your ears and listen to all the nominated songs in this week’s About to Pop, then cast your vote for your favorite once per hour! The poll will remain open until 3PM EST on Monday, Nov. 5.

About to Pop: Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift + More Singles

Congratulations to Boys Like Girls! The band’s single ‘Be Your Everything’ dominated last week’s About to Pop voting, a huge feat on its own, but especially when your up against Justin Bieber‘s army of fans! Boys Like Girls received almost half of the readers’ votes in our About to Pop poll, which means ‘Be Your Everything’ will receive 20+ spins on PopCrush’s weekend radio show this Saturday and Sunday. Check out a list of stations where you can tune in by clicking here.

This week, Alicia Keys is kicking off the About to Pop competition with her strong, girl power anthem ‘Girl on Fire.’ Will Ms. Keys be able to come out on top with her moving, soulful vocals, or will she be overtaken by Taylor Swift, who has been on a roll lately with singles from her latest album ‘Red.’ Swift’s five-star rated single ‘State of Grace’ is in the running this week, so we’ll see if fans are loving the uptempo tune as much as we are.

While Keys and Swift are two musical forces to be reckoned with, any one of the other nominees in this week’s poll could be crowned the new champ. Neon Trees are up for this week’s About to Pop win with ‘Lessons in Love (All Day, All Night),’ another infectiously upbeat pop-rock jam  from the quartet, but this time with a little more edge than their previous hit ‘Everybody Talks.’

Then there’s Calvin Harris, who teamed up with soul-quaking vocalist Florence Welch for the invigorating yet melancholy house tune ‘Sweet Nothing.’ Finally, we’ve got the Ready Set‘s ‘Give Me Your Hand (Best Song Ever),’ a high-energy, electro-pop party tune with a simply sweet sing-along chorus.

Vote in this week’s About to Pop poll below — voting ends at 3PM EST on Monday, Oct. 29.

About to Pop: Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson + More Singles

Bruno Mars might’ve gotten ‘Locked Out of Heaven,’ but thanks to his fans, the crooner’s new single has gained admittance to this week’s About to Pop slot! Mar’s latest song release received more than half of the votes last week, meaning ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ will receive 20+ spins on PopCrush’s weekend radio show this Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 21. Congratulations, Bruno!

So, what’s in the pipeline for this week’s fan-voted poll? Beliebers will be happy to hear that Justin Bieber is leading this week’s About to Pop competition with his new Nicki Minaj-assisted single ‘Beauty and a Beat.’ It’s another uptempo party jam from the Biebs, with a heavy electro breakdown and a Roman-esque rap from the Harajuku Barbie. But if Bieber is going to win, he’ll have to beat out Kelly Clarkson, who is impressing us with her vocal abilities once again on her midtempo, sing-and-clap-along single ‘Catch My Breath.’

The star power doesn’t stop there. Taylor Swift fans can vote on her ‘Red’ track ‘I Knew You Were Trouble,’ which strays a bit from her typical formula. While Swift still has elements of country and pop present as per usual, the singer-songwriter gets pitchy (in a good way) on the super fast, stick-in-your-head chorus before she delivers a dose of dubstep. That seems to be a trend lately, as more and more younger pop artists are picking up on heavier EDM influences.

While Taylor experiments, R&B crooner Miguel is keeping the sound fans fell in love with on his super smooth love song ‘Adorn.’ The foxy singer’s voice is swoon-worthy on this slow jam, leaving lady listeners weak in the knees. And rounding out this week’s greatly varied About to Pop poll are Boys Like Girls, whose midtempo, pop-rock single ‘Be Your Everything’ is so infectious, we dare you not to start learning to words just so you can attempt to hit Martin Johnson’s falsetto.

Take a listen to all five of this week’s About to Pop nominees below and vote for your favorite once per hour! The poll will close on Monday, Oct. 22 at 3PM EST.
